Applesauce Cake with Burnt Cinnamon Sugar Frosting

This warmly spiced cake is a perfect dessert as the leaves start to change. Cinnamon, applesauce, and clove give the cake its delicious flavor, fall in every bite. And if you’ve picked your own apples this fall, fresh applesauce will make this that much better.

I think this is such a cozy dessert and the resulting cake is perfectly moist, all topped off with an amazing burnt cinnamon sugar frosting.

Burnt Cinnamon Sugar Frosting has a unique taste. It’s a potluck, country road, spent more time in the kitchen flavor. There’s no store-bought frosting that gives you this. You’ll have to “burn” the sugar yourself, but let me tell you- it is definitely worth every lick of the spoon and every bite. It definitely has it’s own unique flavor.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
First, cream the butter and sugar in a stand mixer.
Add the eggs and beat well. Then, add the applesauce.

Place all ingredients and syrup mixture except vanilla in a double boiler and beat until thoroughly combined.
Cook over boiling water, beating steadily until frosting forms peaks. This will take a little while. Remove from heat, add vanilla, and beat until thick enough to spread.

Keep whisking! You might need to use some muscle…

The moist, semi-chunky cake, spread with the frosting equivalent of brown sugar fudge, is perfect served with a cup of coffee or, better still, a glass of ice-cold milk.
